What is Good Web Design?

Gone are the days when everyone wants all-singing, all-dancing websites which contain more gimmicks and animations than content!

It is well-known that users find all this graphical overload distracting, and the download times frustrating.

Currently, the trend is for clean, unfussy, modern-looking websites which present the information clearly and logically.

Of course, each website needs to use colour and images, but the best advice is to stick to a couple of key colours, and keep animation (and therefore download times) to a minimum.

GETTING STARTED ON THE WEB

Many people now use the internet as their first port of call to search for a business or service - so if you've not got a web presence you could be missing out!

It doesn't cost an arm and a leg to create a small, simple website, but it could make a big difference to your business. To find out how to create your own website in easy stages, we have described the process below.

Creating a new website - a simple guide

1. Choose a Domain Name

For example, www.yourbusinessname.co.uk - we can help you to choose an appropriate name for your website, check the available options for your chosen name - and then register the name for you with an approved domain name registration service. Depending on the name you choose this normally costs about £10 to register the name for two years.

2. Create an Email Account
We can then create one or multiple email accounts for you, to your chosen names or "enquiries", "sales" etc - at your new website.

3. Arrange Web Hosting

We also discuss web hosting packages with you - and find the best one for your needs. Web hosting packages can cost as little as £5 per month - that includes your web space and your email account.

4. Design the Website Structure
We will work with you to design a website which suits your business, using the colours and styles of your choice. We will then work out how many pages you need, and map out the structure and content for each page.

5. Prepare the Content and Images
You can add anything you like to your website! A good start for small businesses is to include your company logo, a short description of the products and services your company offers, your contact details, information on how to order, and ideally some testimonials from previous satisfied customers. Add to this a couple of photographs or graphics which represent your business offering and you have enough information to populate your first web page! Note - if you are selling products online then you are legally obliged to include certain information on your site.

We will then prepare the content for you in html for you to view in your web browser. If you are happy with the design then we will upload the files to your website. All content will be professionally edited and proof-read as a matter of course.

6. Your New Website - Next Steps
Your website is now ready to be launched! The final stage of the process is to submit the URL of your site to the major search engines, eg Google, to make sure your customers can find the site with an internet search.

7. Now Keep the Content Fresh
It is essential to regularly add new and fresh content to your website if you want to keep it up-to-date. If you want to add pages or new sections to your website, then we can create content for you, or work with your existing copy to prepare it for your website.
